The Benefits of Fasting When You Fast Correctly

Fasting is a form of weight loss and health we don't hear too much about. There's no money in it for the diet companies. The secret of the health benefits of fasting is coming out. Here are some benefits of fasting for health and weight loss....

Intermittent fasting suggests that changes in mealtimes, and not the meals, can be good for you. But what are the dos and don’ts of eating less frequently?

Intermittent fasting is championed by celebrities and CEOs alike for its weight loss and health benefits. While there is promising evidence that fasting can help our bodies repair and perhaps extend our lifespans, it might not be the best approach for losing weight, and dietitians urge caution before cutting out meals.

Intermittent fasting is a type of time-restricted diet in which fasters leave a long gap between their last meal of one day and first of the next, compressing their meals into a shorter period during the day. Typically, fasters try to leave a gap of 16 hours without food and eat during an eight-hour window. Intermittent fasting is not the only type of time-restricted diet. Others like the 5:2 diet (in which dieters eat a normal amount of food for five days before two days of eating only 25% of their usual calorie intake) focus more on the amount of food consumed, rather than the time between meals.

“Time-restricted feeding is used as a weight-loss tool, but it’s not my favorite approach,” says Rachel Clarkson, founder of London-based consultancy The DNA Dietitian. “You reduce calories but you don’t learn the essential behavior change around what you're putting into your body.”

Clarkson says that without learning what a healthy diet looks like people gain weight again when they stop fasting. “If it means you are feeling starved and restricted then the next day you might over-eat.

So, intermittent fasting might not be the right approach for people seeking weight loss, but there might be other reasons to change your eating patterns. Fasting is linked to a process called autophagy, which is attracting a lot of interest for its potential health benefits.

Autophagy is the process by which the body starts to recycle the structures inside its cells, including the nucleus, where DNA is stored, the mitochondria, which synthesize the chemical our cells use for energy, and lysosomes, which remove waste from our cells. In doing so, the cell can remove defunct structures, freeing up new raw materials from which new cellular structures can be built. Some of the new raw materials might be used to make cell-protective proteins that further extend the lifespan of cells.

There is interest in whether autophagy can increase the lifespan of whole organisms, though so far this has only been replicated in animals There is interest in whether autophagy can increase the lifespan of whole organisms, too – though so far this has only been replicated in animals, like 1mm-long nematode worms and mice, and not humans (inhibited autophagy has also been linked to early-onset aging). Until there are longitudinal studies of human intermittent fasters, it is too soon to say that it will extend our lifespans.

But, other animal studies have linked autophagy to improvements in immune system memory. The fact that autophagy is essential to maintain cell health has also generated interest in its role in cancer suppression. There might be more reasons than increasing lifespan to take interest in autophagy.

For most of us, autophagy occurs in our sleep, but it is also brought on by exercise and starvation. Could controlled fasting help to trigger it?

Unlike calorie-restrictive diets (which have also been linked to longevity), the purpose of intermittent fasting is to increase the amount of time between the last meal of one day and the first of the next. (In theory, an intermittent faster could eat the same amount of calories as normal, though in practice Clarkson says most people reduce their intake slightly.) This could help to promote autophagy, but to understand how we should look at what happens to us after we eat.

“When you stop eating at 19:00 you will still be in the ‘fed state’ until 22:00 because you will still be digesting nutrients,” says Clarkson. “Any carbohydrates in your diet will give you a nice supply of glucose, our premium source of fuel, for a few hours.”

The fed state is when your body uses glucose in your blood as its source of energy. Once this energy source is used up, the body switches into a catabolic state – usually around three hours after eating. In this phase, glycogen stored in the liver and muscles is broken down into glucose. When we have depleted the glycogen stores, the body switches from glucose to ketones, which are made in the liver from fatty acids. It’s at this point, a stage called ketosis, that autophagy is triggered.

“We don’t know exactly when we shift from glucose to ketones,” says Clarkson. “It depends on so many things; genetics, health, lifestyle. How much glycogen you have will be based on how much you have eaten and how much energy you have burned.”

Someone who has a high-carb diet might never move beyond the catabolic state as they will always have a reserve supply of glycogen. However, someone with a low-carb diet and who regularly exercises might move through it very quickly (the “keto diet”, in which you cut out almost all carbs to maintain low blood glucose levels and glycogen stores, works in the same way). “I would move away from intermittent fasting for fat loss, and if you want to adopt it think about the health benefits,” says Clarkson.

How to fast

“To fast you have to downregulate the feeling of hunger,” says Clarkson. Hunger is felt when ghrelin, a hormone released from our stomach, triggers the production of two other hormones, called NPY and AgRP, in the hypothalamus.

While these three hormones generate feelings of hunger, there are a multitude more that suppress it. Sometimes called the “satiety hormones”, one of the key ones is leptin which is released from fat cells to suppress the production of ghrelin – basically telling the body "there is fat here that you can burn".

Ghrelin is sometimes called the short-term hunger response because it is released when the stomach is empty and there is less pressure on the stomach wall. It can be overridden to a certain extent by drinking water. Leptin meanwhile works over the long term.

“Our hunger hormones are regulated by many things, genetics being one of them,” says Clarkson. “But thinking about the nerves that are attached to our stomach and digestive tract – if your stomach is not distended your body will think it is hungry.” She adds that staying hydrated can help with the early feelings of hunger until your body has adjusted. “The first couple of weeks will be tough, but you get used to it.”

For most people, ketosis occurs 12-24 hours after eating, so if you have your evening meal between 18:00 and 20:30, the fed state would end between 21:00 and 23:30 and ketosis and autophagy might occur by 06:00 to 08:30 the following morning. “But the majority of people are sitting down and opening a packet of something else after dinner,” says Clarkson. “Snacking or sugary drinks and beer extend the fed state for three hours. If you finish snacking at 21:30-22:00, the fed state is being taken to 01:00-03:00,” she says. This might mean ketosis never occurs before you next have a meal.

“If you can make the informed decision of eating the evening meal an hour earlier and not snacking, you may be getting into that ketosis state by morning, versus someone who is having the high-carb evening meal and snacking, waking up at 06:00 and never getting into that state,” she says. Clarkson suggests starting by eating earlier on a Sunday evening, or having breakfast an hour later and starting from there, building up from one or two days each week.

With a careful approach, intermittent fasting might help your body to perform its own repairs and recoveries. Autophagy appears to decline with age, so giving yourself a boost later in life might be useful. But be aware that it might not be the right strategy for weight loss, and there is no replacement for a balanced diet.

My Fasting Journal To Lose Weight and Improve My Health Maintenance Sunday 1

You can't just fast 4 days then go back to your normal lifestyle. This is my first Sunday fasting maintenance day. Continuing my fasting journal so you may decide if fasting is the right thing for you to lose weight and get healthier. The more I research fasting the more I see the benefits of fasting, not just in weight loss, but cleansing the body and having more energy.

Last Night I Stepped on The Scale

I weighed 195lbs with my sweats on. Kind of chilly here in Honolulu right now. This morning when I stepped on the scale I weighed 193lbs wearing my sweats. I started my fasting journal and journey at 198lbs. That means I kept a minimum of 3lbs off. More importantly, I got a bunch of toxic garbage out of my system. I still feel better now than before I fasted for 4 days

Don't Go Crazy The Night Before

It was tempting to stuff food in my mouth knowing I won't be eating the next day. I think that's a normal survival trait.

A few things I learned during my 4 day fast

I learned a little hunger is nothing. Just ignore it and it will go away. It will not get bigger except possibly in your mind.

I don't have to eat just because I'm a little hungry. This sounds like I'm repeating myself but it's two different lessons.

Don't eat due to an event. By this I mean getting home from teaching school or in home tutoring. or even waking up in the morning. I don't believe breakfast is the most important meal of the dal. I believe the most important meal of the day is the one you eat when your body needs the nutrition.

My mind is in charge of my body. I completed my 4 day fast because that's what I said I was going to do, period. Most of the videos I listened to suggested starting with a 12 hour fast or even just skipping a meal.

My maintenance plan

Starting when I wake up I drink water only. To keep up my electrolytes I'll also be drinking coconut water .

1:25 PM on my first water fasting Sunday to lose weight and improve my health

It's raining real hard here in Honolulu. I even heard thunder which is unusual.

For the heck of it, I stepped on the scale and was 2lbs lighter despite all the water I've been drinking. I stopped my reflex to go get something to eat when I got hungry. I drank some coconut water instead of eating.

I'm thinking people don't fast regularly because they don't see it on television. After all, there's very little to sell someone if you suggest fasting. Speaking of which I did find a resource on fasting I want to share with you.

This is Interesting 4:30 PM on my first water fasting Sunday to lose weight and improve my health

If you've ever wondered how much water and human waste weighs, I had to use the restroom. For the purposes of this discussion, you'll need to know number 2.

So I stepped on the scale before using the restroom. I weighed 190.0lbs. I had to get a good scale for my first video doctor appointment after I got out of the hospital. Thus the .0 since it's a digital scale.

After I finished using the restroom I got on the scale again 189.0lbs! I lost one pound going to the restroom. This gives you an idea why people lose weight quickly when they do a cleanse or start a weight loss program. All that waste in their intestines is heavy!

The Next Morning of My First Sunday Maintenance Water Fast Day

I stepped on the scale and weighed 185lbs. Still wearing sweat pants it was cold this morning.

I stepped on the scale this morning

I now weigh 186.8lbs! Having started at 198 that's not too bad. Now for full disclosure. I wasn't always that good at weighing myself in as little clothing as possible. I weighed myself this morning in my underwear with no shirt on before drinking any water after going to the bathroom. Water weighs a lot in case you don't know that.

Had a little hunger pang. Drank some coconut water .

I Texted a Friend Who Went on a 3 Day Fast Here's What He Said

Watery runs man
Cramps back
And body
Add some tartar or magnesium
Make sure to take in some salt
As you detox will help you recover
But pretty much not hungry

My friend is not a doctor, but he is very good at research. I continue to suggest seeing a health professional before fasting.

I did not experience the problems with bowel movements or cramps in my back my friend mentioned. I have experienced some stomach discomfort aside from hunger pangs which I pretty well ignored. That might be a martial arts thing. For full disclosure it did concern me a bit since it was diverticulitis that put me in the hospital back in June.

The cramps were probably prevented by drinking coconut water since it gave me the electrolytes I wouldn't have received with straight water fasting. Just a guess. I was a health minor in college but, I am not a doctor.

6:27 Day 4 of My Fasting for Health and Weight Loss

My maintenance plan

I plan on water fasting every Sunday. Another lesson I'm learning as I go into my final day in my 4 day fast is not to eat due to a triggered event. Such as getting home from teaching school for example. Am I tired or hungry?

Bedtime Day 4 of My Fasting for Health and Weight Loss

I stepped on the scale wearing very little and weighed 186.4lbs. You may recall I started at 198lbs. I believe this slowing down of weight loss means I cleansed my system. I did a cleanse a few years ago and lost weight quickly, then the weight loss slowed down.

This is why companies can brag about things like losing 10lbs in a week. It's because you're getting all the garbage out of your body. Once that's gone the weight loss slows down.

Final Entry - Unless I think of something else of course

I step on the scale on day five which means later I can eat! Anyway, I weighed 185.2lbs. To me, this confirms my theory that I had cleansed my body of the garbage in my system. The weight loss is slowing down.

Afterward, I had my protein and vegetable powder drink.

Things I've learned during my fast

STOP EATING UNLESS I'M HUNGRY!

Quit eating when I'm not hungry any longer.

DUH!

People eat for so many reasons other than being hungry. As an expert in behavior management I should have analyzed my own behaviors better. If I would have being overweight would have never been a problem. I still workout with martial arts so even at being overweight I'm in better shape than most overweight people, but that's no excuse. I need to be harder on myself than anyone else would.

7:24 AM Day 3 of My Fasting for Health and Weight Loss

Woke up and stepped on the scale on day three of my fasting for health and weight loss. I now weigh 190lbs. Obviously, I continued to lose a little weight throughout the night. If people stop eating after a certain point in the evening it would help keep them from gaining weight.

A couple of hunger pangs. Drank some coconut water . Really all this fear of fasting stuff is just fear of the unknown. See a healthcare profession and just do it. Once you get over your first bit of OMG I'm hungry what do I do!, it's very manageable.

5:03 PM Day 3 of My Fasting for Health and Weight Loss

I'm starting to lose the habit of wanting to eat at certain times. I did want to eat as soon as I got home from my in home tutoring appointment which had been a habit of mine. I want to reiterate the hunger pangs just aren't that big of a deal. They come around the time I would normally eat and don't even last 5 minutes.

I stepped on the scale one more time and weighed 190lbs. Not bad since I started at 198lbs. I can't emphasize how much these hunger pangs are no big deal. I remember speaking to an obese martial artist years ago, I was a health minor in college so I was giving him a few weight loss tips. His reply,

"No, I know my body I need more than that."

NO HE DID NOT KNOW HIS BODY OR HE WOULDN'T BE OBESE!

I noticed this as I lied down on my side

I didn't feel the weight of my stomach when I lied down. Those of you with excess fat around your midsection know what I'm talking about.

A few hunger pangs during the day. They went away in about 10 minutes each. Still just drinking water and coconut water For some reason my mouth tasted like I ate something. I had not done so.

About 7:20

I had a much larger hunger pang. I drank coconut water which relieved it.

My Plan

Is to do this Tuesday and Wednesday as well. I the water fast on Sunday

To Me

It's not a question of seeing if I can complete this fast. The question is not even in my mind. If I say I'm going to something I do it, period. I believe that's how people should act in general. Teachers will ask me to substitute teach, here in Honolulu Hawaii, for them months in advance and not even follow up with me because they know if I said it they may consider it done.

Weight

So far I've gone from 198lbs to 192lbs. I continue to believe weight loss is not the most important thing considering the extensive health benefits from fasting. See the video I shared on day 1.

My Water Fast and Fasting Journal To Lose Weight and Improve My Health Day 1

I've decided to record my experiences as I water fast and fast for my readers in order to lose weight and improve my health

I stepped on the scale this morning (12/26/2021) and weighed 192lbs. I've gained about 20lbs after being in the hospital in June of 2021. I lost about 40lbs because the hospital wouldn't let me eat in case I needed major surgery. That was my introduction to the benefits of fasting.

So far the plan is to water faster at least 24 hours then 2 to 3 days of protein powder and powdered vegetables.

As an in home tutor here in Honolulu Hawaii specializing in ADHD since I have ADHD myself, I'm pretty good at analyzing my own behaviors. For example, this morning on my first day as I felt a little hungry I stopped myself from immediately opening the refrigerator. I noted that to myself and reminded myself to drink water. I also plan on drinking coconut water for the electrolytes. Coconut water was the only thing that gave me enough energy to get out of bed after my hospital stay followed by a very strict diet.

Now that I can eat more it makes me wonder if I'm overcompensating by eating more than I should be eating. I probably am.

I'm definitely peeing a lot

That's a good thing. The pee is clear. I believe the average person in the U.S. is dehydrated. This would lead to more of a yellow urine flow and in extreme cases blood in the urine.

Legal and Safety Stuff

Reminds me for legal reasons I should state always see a health care professional before starting any type of diet. It's always a good safety precaution as well.

It's About 1:30

I keep wanting to go to the frig and eat. I'm not really that hungry. This tells me I'm fighting a behavior not a physical need.

4:20 PM First hunger pang

As a martial artist, I treat this the same way I would pain.

I recognize it

Accept it

Then make it a part of me

By 4:30 PM, maybe even shorter than that, it was gone.

Don't tell yourself you couldn't do that. Whether you think you can ignore a hunger pang or whether you think you cannot - you're right. Your mind is in charge of your body. Not the other way around.

Observation 6:19 PM

Since I'm not eating, especially on a Sunday, which is a lazy day for me, I find myself having to think of something to do besides eat. I believe this is a larger challenge than the minor hunger pangs I had earlier.

Final For Day 1

It's actually Monday morning the next day. I made it without eating, I feel fine. I did just wake up so I have to make sure this makes sense. I'm not hungry, starving or any of that. It's tempting to continue with the water fast instead of my vegetable protein powder and vegetable powder mix. A little hint on that, heat the water up for about 50 seconds and use one of those bottles you can shake

Oh, I lost 5lbs. More importantly, I'm cleansing my body of all the garbage I've put in it since my hospital stay.

My Thought as To Why There's Not More Research on The Benefits of Fasting

There's no money in it! No special meals to sell or pills to take. There's been some research on animals which show a lot of positive benefits. Who would fund the research? Big Pharma? No thanks.
